Barbaric Protopia (Raster), 2022
Some works don’t just reimagine the past; they ask us to look again, and more closely. In Barbaric Protopia (Raster), a familiar image becomes something new.
The original painting (portrait at the end),Still Life with Philodendron I by Roberto Burle Marx, was created in 1943, at a time when Brazil was still deeply shaped by colonial aesthetics. Burle Marx, one of the country’s first environmental activists, challenged that.
He celebrated native plants, wild forms, and the untamed beauty of his land. This piece carries that spirit forward. What once was lush and painterly is now pixelated, interrupted.
The image is still there, but fragmented, filtered, made strange again. It feels like memory: vivid in parts, lost in others. That’s what draws us in. The tension. The layers. The way this work invites reflection, on land, legacy, and what we choose to preserve.
There’s no single message here. Just space to feel: the beauty, the rupture, the possibility. It’s a quiet conversation between past and present. A tribute. A challenge. And like all meaningful art, it stays with you.

"As a painter and Appropriation artist, I translate the ideas of Metamodernism into visual representations. It is sensitive to me to do it through painting – a premodern media; and to apply Appropriation Art – a postmodern artistic strategy, in the making.
Themes such as oscillation between sincerity and irony; urbanistics; reconstructing ecologism; politics and governance; transculturalism; and the search for meaning and authenticity in a digitalized world are subject matters of my practice."
