Tracing the Dots - Composition of Three Vases
There’s something deeply rhythmic about the way these three porcelain vessels hold space. Together, they feel less like a collection and more like a conversation — one shaped by tide, memory, and hand. Created by Singaporean artist Donald Eric Lim, each form draws from the quiet complexity of marine life. The surfaces are marked with slip-dots, not merely decoration, but a textured language. They invite your fingers to read them like braille: wave-like, intentional, alive. It’s a tactile memory of the ocean, held in porcelain.
Lim’s background in calligraphy, graphic design, and traditional Asian ceramic practices echoes through each piece — not as a direct quote, but as a rhythm. Ancient forms reimagined not as relics, but as living gestures. You can feel the lineage, but also the play. Precision met with breath.
This particular composition, sourced from a private collection and brought to Collectnoir via Jules Lambe , carries a rare unity. It’s not about symmetry. It’s about resonance. Each vessel anchors the others, and together, they create a quiet gravitational field. Something to circle around. Something to return to.
These are not objects of function. They are vessels of atmosphere. And like all true ceramics, they hold more than form, they hold time.

Tracing the Dots - Composition of Three Vases
“At one stage, the West was eager to know the secret of “kaolin” – the essential component of porcelain. That is how invaluable fine china was perceived. Now it appears to be no less than a form of craft. I want to elevate it back to its former glory and revive the rigour behind this art form”
