Origami VIII, 2022
We first encountered Delphine Burtin’s work some time ago, while sourcing visual artists for a hospitality project in Zurich. Among the proposals, her images felt different—quiet, composed, and emotionally resonant. They held something still, yet always shifting.
Her Origami series in particular stayed with us. Inspired by the magnolia trees of Zurich, she reimagines the flower through a process of folding, layering, and abstraction—transforming something delicate into something architectural.
Each work in the series blurs the line between photograph and object. What begins as a botanical form becomes a sculptural meditation on impermanence, introspection, and the way beauty lives in tension.
There’s no demand in her images—only invitation. They ask you to pause, to look again, and to let the quiet in.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in 1974, Delphine Burtin lives and works in Lausanne, Switzerland. After a career in graphic design, she shifted her focus to photography, studying at the Vevey School of Applied Arts. Her work gained early recognition with the series Encouble, which was shortlisted for the Paris Photo–Aperture First PhotoBook Award and won the Prix HSBC in 2014. Burtin’s practice explores themes of illusion and disappearance, using still life and visual puzzles to challenge perception and reveal the ambiguity of the visible world.
CURATOR´S NOTE
Delphine Burtin’s Origami series occupies a space between photography and sculpture, stillness and transformation. Rooted in observation yet abstract in form, these works reimagine the magnolia—folded, layered, and gently fragmented—into compositions that are both precise and dreamlike. What begins as a study of nature becomes something far more introspective: an exploration of impermanence, rhythm, and the quiet architecture of emotion. Each piece invites closeness. Not to explain, but to feel. To inhabit the delicate tension between fragility and form. This is photography as presence—measured, poetic, and quietly powerful.
