Genetic Jenga as a Zero-Sum Game, 2017
Tense, towering and deceptively playful, Genetic Jenga as a Zero Sum Game turns a familiar childhood structure into a metaphor for high stakes systems.
Pauline Batista’s sculpture fuses transparency and tension: Perspex panels printed with ghosted imagery stack precariously, held in place by thin metal wires that seem to both support and threaten collapse.
The work asks what happens when one life’s gain means another’s loss. Referencing genetics, data systems and social hierarchy, Batista explores the fragility of structures built on imbalance. It’s a piece that doesn’t just stand, it balances, questions and warns.

"Art. The feeling of wanting to say something and the eternal, and always slightly failed, attempts at doing so. It is a never ending process and therefore always in motion. I also, perhaps naively, believe in its power. It can potentially be uncompromising in what it wants to say."

CURATOR´S NOTE
There’s a quiet tension that builds the longer you stand with Genetic Jenga as a Zero Sum Game. It’s not just about structure, it’s about risk. Pauline Batista turns the language of science and systems into something bodily and unstable. The Perspex gleams like data made physical, but the metal wires whisper fragility. This isn’t a monument, it’s a question: what are we balancing, and who bears the weight when something shifts? It feels like holding your breath in a system that was never designed to be fair.
