Wanampi (Rainbow Serpent), 2023
Aileen Adamson’s work carries the weight of story, spirit, and place. In this piece, she honours Wanampi (the Rainbow Serpent), a powerful ancestral being in Pitjantjatjara culture and guardian of sacred waterholes.More than a myth, Wanampi is a living presence: a shaper of land, a keeper of memory, a symbol of movement and creation. Through intricate dotting and a striking use of colour, Adamson evokes the pulse of Country—its sacred rhythms, and the histories embedded in earth and water.
Painted on Belgian linen, a material both durable and refined, the work feels grounded in tradition while reaching toward the transcendent. The texture of the linen allows the acrylic to breathe, adding dimensionality to the story held within the surface. What makes the work so inspiring is not just its visual beauty, but the depth it holds. It’s a painting that creates space—for reverence, for culture, and for the enduring relationship between people and land.
To stand before it is to feel connected—not only to the image, but to something far older, and still very much alive.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Aileen Adamson was born in 1988 and resides in the remote community of Kaltjiti, formerly Fregon, located in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands of South Australia. Aileen was taught to paint by her older sister, renowned artist Andrea Adamson (deceased). The two sisters share some stylistic similarities, particularly in the use of symbols and choice of vivid colours. Aileen paints the story of the great creator being, Wanampi, the Rainbow Serpent. This is the same story her mother Kukika Adamson paints, as well as the story painted by her famous grandfather, Tiger Palpatja (1920-2012). Aileen inherited this story through her mother’s side. Aileen has four children and in addition to painting, works as an Aboriginal Liaison Officer in Kaltjiti, assisting with interpretation and translation services.
CURATOR´S NOTE
Our journey into art began with Aboriginal painting—an immediate, visceral connection to story, place, and spirit. There’s a depth in these works that transcends surface; they speak of time, memory, and living culture. We hold Wanampi with quiet reverence. Aileen Adamson’s work captures the powerful presence of the Rainbow Serpent, an ancestral force whose essence flows through land and lore. Her use of vibrant colour and traditional dotting bridges ancient storytelling with a bold, contemporary hand—echoing the pulse that first drew us in, and continues to guide our curation today.
